[RESOLVED] [HOWTO] QuickTip: Fixing KOrganizer’s “No calendars found, event cannot be added.” error

Updated 23 August: It turns out I posted too soon. I can see my calendar items when I open KOrganizer when I specifically open the calendar I created, but I can’t see the entries when I merge it into the default calendar. I’ll post an update once I can figure out exactly what’s gone wrong.

Updated 17 September: I finally found the fix. I had to create a new calendar but I needed to create an Akonadi calendar. See below for info and screenshots.

Today I finally sat down to put some appointments into KOrganizer and everything seemed to be going well until I clicked the Apply button. Then I got an error stating  ”No calendars found, event cannot be added.” I turned to DuckDuckGo to try to find how to fix this bug and found Bug 279665 – Cannot create events – Error: ‘No calendars found, event cannot be added’ on KDE’s bug tracker, but it didn’t show a way to resolve the bug. It seems to be a problem with upgrading to KDE 4.7.4 but it’s definitely still present in KDE 4.8.4 since that’s what I’m running. I did see comments somewhere about blowing away the /home folder and doing a clean install of KDE, but of course that’s not an acceptable option for me. I ended up going into ~/.kde/share/config and blowing away files related to KOrganizer but that didn’t seem to do anything.

It turns out I wasn’t seeing everything in Korganizer. While digging through messages on the Debian-KDE mailing list on the thread KOrganizer is unusable after upgrade to 4.7.4 I found a response by Mirosław Zalewski with a screenshot, which I’ve shown on the right, that shows a pane I wasn’t seeing. I moved my mouse down to the bottom of the todos and sure enough, a resize handle showed up. I pulled it up and found a calendar marked Birthdays. I tried to add a new calendar in a local directory but I got an error about not being able to create the calendar. I did have an .ICS calendar created because I could open it in KOrganizer and see the data I had stored, but I couldn’t get at it from within my default calendar. I ended up creating a new Akonadi calendar and tell KOrganizer to use my std.ics calendar, which I could open in KOrganizer and see saved entries, as a calendar source.

Once I did that I wasn’t able to see the calendar entries I had created but after poking around in the settings page for Kontact they showed up, although I have no clue what I did to get them to show up. All I can say for sure is that I can now use my KDE calendar and have it remind me or things I need to do, like a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.
